In our Kindergarten class, our kids learn to do three-digit addition and subtraction. They learn grouping of the numbers. They learn to read. They do comprehension and spelling tests. They also do word opposites, rhyming words, and compound words. By the middle of the school year, they start writing about 20 words by themselves. They know the continents and the states, how to write the date, the weather, etc. Our children are ready for public schools.
Once in public schools, most of the Montessori children are one grade level above where they should be. In the Kindergarten Montessori environment, children are grouped in mixed ages and abilities in four to six years old. There is constant interaction, problem solving, child to child teaching and socialization.
Children are challenged according to their ability and are never bored. The Kindergarten environment is arranged according to subject area, and children are always free to move around the room instead of staying at desks. There is no limit to how long a child can work with a piece of material. At any one time in a day, all subjects-math, language, science, history, geography, art, music, etc. will be being studies at all levels.
All types of intelligence and styles of learning are nurtured; musical, bodily, kinesthetic, spatial, interpersonal, intuitive and the traditional linguistic and logical mathematical (reading, writing, and math). The particular model is backed by Harvard Psychologist Howard Gardner's theory of multiple intelligence.
